Principal Civil Engineer Shirley Lau is promoted to Assistant Director of Street Services.

Public Works: On Dec. 4, Public Works/Street Services appointed Shirley Lau as its Assistant Director (Chief Technical Officer). Previously, Shirley was the Division Manager for Public Works/Engineering’s Bridge Improvement Division.

She will oversee all the Engineers and Landscape Architects at StreetsLA, including the functions of Streetscape Design, Asset Management, Street Furniture, Contracted Construction Management and Metro Plan review.

Her career with the City started in 1993, shortly after earning a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering from UCLA. She also holds a master of science degree in civil engineering from UC Irvine.

In her 28 years with the City, Shirley has held positions in several divisions and departments. As head of the Bridge team, she led the design and construction of nearly $300 million of bridge improvement projects, including the retrofitting, widening or replacing of existing vehicular bridges. Recently, Shirley also worked on multimodal bridges, including the recently completed North Atwater Bridge for horses, pedestrians and cyclists and the Red Car Pedestrian Bridge.

Shirley also led Engineering’s Mentorship Program, established to promote and accelerate the learning, growth and development of the Bureau’s employees.
