THEME: I Love LA

“My interpretation of LA is a bit different than most. We have large ships calling the Port of LA, fishing boats, Pilot Boats and beautiful sunrises over the container cranes. It makes for a beautiful sight some days.”

– Cherie Ivers, Harbor

John’s comment: I love the stillness of this photo, Cherie. I also love that you’ve mixed palm trees and the unloading cranes into the background. They are both integral to the mixture of what LA is – a working City, a beautiful City. Thanks for submitting!

“Yes, there is the never ending traffic. And the fires. And the earthquakes. But then there’s also this: Killer views to the horizon and beyond. The sea. The islands. The mountains. Depending on where you live, just minutes away. So take a close look and a deep breath and then repeat after me: ‘What’s not to totally love about LA?’”

– Yves Didier, Airport Police

John’s comment: Yes to all of that, Yves! But there’s more to your photo than that – there’s the perfect staging of the motorcycle and the couple looking the other way, placed right on the thirds, as they say. That creates symmetry amidst the stillness. Well done!

“Summer 2017, looking from the east.”

Russell Harris, Retired, Public Works/Sanitation

John’s comment: Russell, you’ve created simplicity here to make a point – with the monotone colors of the buildings contrasted with the organic colors of the trees and the Chinatown Metro station, all set off by the blue sky. A City and nature, together – that’s LA. Thanks!

“Sunset over the port that never closes. The little tug G.F. Nicholson at rest alongside the Port’s pre-WWII wooden piledriving barge and old diesel crane, in the construction and maintenance yard. Nothing is ever too old to keep America’s number one Port running.”

– Capt. Michael Barnes, Retired, Harbor

John’s comment: There’s a dignity in this image, Capt. – work is done, day is done, and it’s time to relax and be proud of the jobs we have. The “well-used” element of the barges and crane tell a story of timelessness and steady on. Nice!

“Another beautiful sunrise over LA!”

– Carlos Aranda, LADWP

John’s comment: A stunner, Carlos! The sky is as much a part of LA as the mall leading up to City Hall. We might not notice it, but we can now, thanks to your awesome photo. An excellent submission.
