Theme: Baseball
“This is my Maury Wills jersey I wore to every Dodger game at least once a season! R.I.P. Maury. Maury and I shopped at the same grocery store, and every time I’d see him, we talked Dodger baseball. He was such a nice man. I got the straight skinny on players
– John Nance, Retired, LADWP
John’s comment:I love how the light filters through from the back, John … like the ghost of Maury still brings the jersey back to life. Thanks for submitting. Oh, and cool story!
“Second day during the Dodgers’ opening week. I was capturing the beautiful sunset from my seat.”
– Leticia Zepeda, Retired, Public Works/Sanitation and Environment
John’s comment:Just a gorgeous night at the ballpark, Leticia. You captured the feeling perfectly with the sunset and the scoreboard. Well done!
“The Louisville Slugger Museum and factory in Louisville, Kentucky. You can watch them turn bats for the major league players.”
– Dennis Eigel, Public Works/Sanitation
John’s comment:Batter up, Dennis! Heh, sorry for the joke. This is an unusual angle for a baseball bat, and shows how important it is to the Louisville Slugger Company. Cool!
“This is my granddaughter, Elyse Bunge, at a [Cleveland] Guardians game. I love her expression holding a baseball!”
– Wanda Fong, Retired, Library
John’s comment:I love this shot, Wanda! Elyse’s expression is exactly what she should be feeling. Here’s hoping it never goes away! Thanks for submitting!
“Here are my son and husband walking into Dodger Stadium ready to see the Dodgers play on the Fourth of July.”
– Stephanie Burkhart, LAPD/Communications
John’s comment:This very POV shot is all about the feeling of getting close to the ballpark. I can hear the crowd, people’s voices getting excited, LAPD helicopters maybe overhead, the stadium announcer making pre-game speeches, and on and on. This photo accomplishes a lot!
“This photo was taken at my first Dodgers game! It was quite an experience, since it was a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers didn’t win, however I got to see Albert Pujols hit his 700th home run!”
– Sharon Khaw, LADWP
John’s comment:Talk about history: The first time you watched future Hall-of-Famer Albert Pujols play was the night he hit his 699th and 700th home runs. It was also the first time he had the honor of playing in front of you! Seriously, though, I like how you captured the gracious symmetrical lines of Dodger Stadium by compressing them into their linear elements. I think it’s the most beautiful ballpark in the world, and your photographic eye showed why. Well done!
“Building and Safety loves the Dodgers and Mookie Betts.”
– Alex Andrews, Building and Safety
John’s comment:You actually constructed this still life, Alex – impressive! This photo belongs nowhere else but Alive!
