Theme: Flags

“This picture was captured at the oath-taking ceremony when I became a citizen of the land of the free and home of the brave. I felt every moment was worth capturing.”

– Muhammad Faizan, LADWP

John’s comment: Muhammad, the simplicity of the composition gives your photo great power. Our nation has been built one person at a time. Congrats on your citizenship!

“This is my granddaughter, Little Emmy, on the Fourth of July 2017, proudly waving the U.S. flag.”

– Lydia Hernandez, Public Works/Street Services

John’s comment: Your granddaughter’s precious face and the flag counter each other perfectly, Lydia. It’s great balance! And I love how she’s gripping the stick. Forever may she wave it proudly! Thanks for submitting.

“The Boy Scouts of the United States raising our flag. The leader of the Boy Scouts is teaching them how to raise the flag of the United States in the flagpole, as ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is sung in Freedom Hall, Pennsylvania.”

– James Corleto Manuel Jr., Building and Safety

John’s comment: Freedom Hall in Philly is where it all began, James. I love your angle as the flag emerges from their bodies – America and its citizens are one and the same. Well done!

“In Playa del Carmen, between my hotel and the next stood flags that lit up at night. I took a picture just because I just thought it looked significant, especially because different countries were represented.”

– Lisa Solis, LADWP

John’s comment: Excellent shot, Lisa! I’m glad you went back because it looks significant to me, too – the people of the world coming together, gently in peace, lighting up the night. Thanks!

“Just a true Dodger fan!”

– Renee Ramirez, LAFD

John’s comment: Ah Renee, I’m beginning to see a pattern of deep affection between you and your Dodgers! I like how this photo draws my eye, at first to all the different-sized buttons, but then the flag pulls my eye up to the top as a final visual statement (balanced by the foam finger). Go Dodgers!!

– Submitted by Yves Didier, Airport Police

John’s comment: What a stunner, Yves – I love everything about this photo. It’s clear and proud, but still in motion — from the flag in the very back, with its out-of-focus bokeh, to the razor-sharp robustness of the flag closest to the front, it shows progress. And that’s what America is to me, a work in progress. We’ll get it right one of these days. Thanks for submitting this strong image!
