Theme: Winter

“A day of snow-shoeing in our local San Gabriel Mountains!”

– Carlos Aranda, LADWP

John’s comment: Your awesome shot of a bleak, white landscape punctuated with a vivid red backpack reminds me that there is life beyond winter. Nice juxtaposition!

“A memory from Tryon Park, New York City.”

– Rose Serrato, LAPD

John’s comment: Winter might be brutal, but as you demonstrate here, Rose, it’s also delicate … if we only bother looking. Thanks for the reminder!

“Taken while snowboarding from the top of Snow Summit ski resort in Big Bear.””

– Kris Petrevski, Harbor

John’s comment: This is a breathtaking panorama shot, Kris. We all think of white as the official color of winter, but this reminds us that if we look at the shadows, that blue and purple and even some green are just as evident. Thanks for submitting!

“This picture was captured at Mt. Baldy during our rainstorm. The kids definitely had fun in the snow!”

Sharon Khaw, LADWP

John’s comment: There are so many good elements here, Sharon – the white rocks as a foundation, the tall trees pulling our eyes upward, and a grayish sky to frame from above. But most of all, with your children at the focal point, it hints that winter can be fun, too.

“Memories of winter snows in Crestline, Calif., with Sandy Cruz the Pomeranian, who passed away at 19 on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, Oct. 4, 2022.”

– Miriam Cruz, Harbor

John’s comment: I love the naturalness of this shot, Miriam. You fit right in to the tallness of the two trees! And the splash of color puts a nice cap on the visual treat. (Our condolences on the loss of Sandy, too.)

“View from Palm Springs tramway. Francis Crocker’s dream of the tramway was born in the 1930s, wishing that he could be transported from the harsh desert to the cool snow. The construction was authorized in 1945 and the inaugural ride occurred on 11/12/1963.”

– Muhammad Faizan, LADWP

John’s comment: Hi Muhammad, I love that you included the sun setting at the far right corner. It might be cold – it sure looks it – but the sun shines on another day of beauty. Thanks for submitting!

“Beautiful snow on mountains, viewed from an airplane on return from Vegas to Ontario, Calif.”

– Marla Chan, Zoo

John’s comment: I can hear the song, Marla – ‘for purple mountain majesties.’ Winter can be viewed from 10,000 feet, too, with beautiful textures and visual rhythms. Excellent.
