Two Shots to Texas
Capt. Michael Barnes, Retired, Harbor, traveled to Texas post-vaccination.
One shot, two shot, and Texas here I come.
Having contracted COVID-19 in early January and fully recovered, and then having both of the recommended inoculation shots, I felt pretty safe to travel again.
So with a quick Texas two-step, I took off to visit the bright city lights of Austin and the rolling green hills of the Fredericksburg wine country.
In 2020 my daughter give me for a Father’s Day present tickets for the Mavericks, a Tex-Mex neotraditional country music, Latin, and rockabilly band. Unfortunately, we all know what happened in 2020 (nothing). Now more than a year later, Austin’s Moody Theater, home of the TV music show Austin City Limits, was once again open for live shows, the first being the Mavericks, and I had tickets.
It was a night to remember, with the safe-distanced seating creating the feeling of being in a nightclub, allowing the music to resonate all round us. After a year of virtual playing, the band really let loose, starting with its opening song “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles; the Mavericks seemed just to get better and better. The band played many old favorites plus quite a few new songs from their latest Spanish CD. At the end of the concert, even with a reduced audience, the applause was deafening.
We spent the following couple of days tasting local distilled hard liquor and sampling some splendid local brewery products in and around the rolling green hills of the neat little American/German town of Fredericksburg. The city is home to Admiral Nimitz and his nautical museum, and there’s a very Germanic feel to the place. All the restaurants and bars were open both inside and out. If you like heavy Northern European-style food, this is the town for you.
On a side note, you have to be careful late at night due to large number of hen party participants cruising the bars.
Tip: Take all the precautions. Always wear your mask and carry your own wipes. Never assume anything is clean unless you see it being cleaned.
Now you can safely leave your castle and look around.
