Rhode Island

Dr. Ed Krupp, Director of the world-famous Griffith Observatory and Club Member, visited Rhode Island last year. Here’s his report.

“The Ladd Observatory in Providence, R.I., belongs to Brown University and was opened in 1891. Like many 19th-century U.S. observatories, it was designed, in part, to provide accurate time for the local area. The observatory now actively promotes public astronomy with public lectures and observing sessions. Dr. David Targan, Associate Dean of the college, is the current Director and made it possible for me to tour the observatory during hours it is normally closed.”
“H.P. Lovecraft, one of America’s best-known authors of stories of supernatural terror, lived in Providence. Lovecraft was also an astronomy enthusiast, wrote astronomical columns for local newspapers in the early 20th century, and frequently made use of Ladd Observatory. Lovecraft is honored on a bronze marker in front of Brown University’s John Hay Library, which contains many of H.P. Lovecraft’s original manuscripts.”
