Ed’s Career
Ed Harding spent his entire City career in Public Works/Street Services in the Street Maintenance Division.
He began his career with the City Jan. 1, 1947 as a Supplies Clerk in the old 12th Street Shop. His first promotion was to Mechanic’s Helper, a trade he learned from his father and further developed while an employee for Chrysler Corp.
Ed was rewarded for his expert mechanical ability with an emergency appointment to Heavy Duty Mechanic. Other promotions followed, which included: Street Maintenance Foreman, Asphalt Construction Foreman, Assistant Superintendent of Street Cleaning, Superintendent of North Maintenance Area, Resurfacing Superintendent for the Interim Assistance Program, and Superintendent of the West Valley Maintenance Area. For three years he was Street Maintenance General Superintendent I in charge of Street Maintenance, Street Resurfacing and Street Cleaning for half of the City.
In 1981, with 34 years of City service, Ed retired as Street Maintenance General Superintendent II, the head of Street Maintenance Division, in charge of all street repairs, street resurfacing and street cleaning for the entire City of Los Angeles.
